Mount Zion Baptist Church Burglarized

Posted May 14th, 2010 by Carter Rierson

On May 12th, 2010 a burglary was reported at Mount Zion Baptist Church. 2019 Fischer St. in  Madison.  According to the City of Madison Police report a large jug of pennies for a fundraiser was stolen from the Pastor’s office

Holy places such as churches and temples are not immune to crime as we saw last week with the cemetery thefts.  Infact, church break-ins have been fairly common.  Several years ago we worked with an area Catholic Church that had been robbed during mass!  In this case the church had just completed their Sunday offering and when the rectors placed the cash in the locked offerings room and returned to mass, the robbers went into the room and stole the cash—thousands of dollars.  In that application Best Defense installed a drop safe and the rectors now directly drop the deposits into a secured vault.

Churches can be challenging to protect from a break-in standpoint as they are by nature designed to be open to the public during many of their hours, leaving them vulnerable to vandalism and theft.  Many Churches for example leave their facility open for use by other non-profits such as Boy Scouts.  Best Defense has installed several types of systems to protect churches.  The most popular, least expensive, and most effective option is an inexpensive burglar alarm.  In many cases these systems are set up to be partitioned, allowing different portions of the building to be armed separately from one another.  For example, the offices can be armed any time a person is not in the office area while the balance of the building could remain disarmed until late at night.   Other systems installed in churches include CCTV camera systems and card access systems.  Electronic access control systems, typically referred to as card readers can be a powerful option for churches.  Card readers offer several benefits.  First, they eliminate the need to give out keys which can easily be duplicated.  Secondly, they allow the system to control what times the cards function, unlike keys, cards can be set to only work at certain times.  Cards can also be programmed to allow access only at certain doors.  For example, the Priest and staff can have access to all doors, but certain other people who need access may only have access to a single perimeter door during certain hours.  With this type of electronic system cards can easily be added or deleted and the system even tracks the use of the cards through a simple to use reporting system.

MATC Computers Stolen

Posted May 13th, 2010 by Carter Rierson

On May 11th, 2010 four laptop computers worth more than $7,000 were stolen from MATC at 3550 Anderson Street.  The MO was reported to by burglary through prying a door open.

Several types of security technologies can be provided to prevent this type of theft.  Even in large buildings such as MATC, security systems can be installed.  The larger the building and more diverse the manner and hours the population uses the building the more challenging this protection can be.  One solution to this sort of problem is a basic burglar alarm for the individual room the computers are stored in.  These systems can be armed using traditional keypads.  A more advanced version of this integrates with an electronic card reader on the door.  If a student or faculty swipes a card to gain entry into the room valid access into the room is granted.  If a burglar or other perpetrator forces entry into the space a door contact installed as part of the electronic access system can set off a local alarm or notify an on-site guard to respond to the room.  In most applications these systems are integrated with digital cameras systems to provide a video archive of exactly who was at the door at the time of the entry.  In the event of an alarm these images can even be mailed to a guards email account, desktop, or IPHONE.

Physical methods of security the computers in rooms such as this include Kensington security locks which make it difficult to remove the computers, causing the burglars to take more time, increasing the chance they may be caught.   Another option commonly applied by Best Defense to directly protect computers and projectors in classrooms or business conference rooms are security cords which tie directly to the computer or projector and set off the alarm if the cord is removed or cut.

Another option is software such as www.lojackforlaptops.com  Using this software, the laptop reports in daily to a remote monitoring station.  If the laptop is reported stolen this check in time is decreased to 15 minutes.  During the checking the laptop attempts to determine its location and report it to the monitoring station.  Another benefit of the lojackforlaptops is that computer owners can remotely delete their sensitive data if their laptop falls into the wrong hands.

In an situation such as this as little as a few hundred dollars in prevention can save thousands in losses.  For more information on educational school security or computer electronic security, contact carter@best-defense.com

Rocky Rococo Armed Robbery

On May 12th, 2010 at 10:38 Rocky Rococo Pizza at 1301 Regent Street was held up at gunpoint.

Armed robberies seem to be on the rise in Madison with several reported just in the last week.  Rocky Rococo is not a client of Best Defense and we have no information on what they currently have for security.  Several options are available to improve security in restaurants such as Rocky Rococo’s.   New video technology such as megapixel IP cameras are nothing short of amazing.  If you think watching CSI in high def is cool, you should check out the new IP cameras.  2 megapixels CCTV cameras provide nearly 6 times as much resolution as a standard analog security camera and when it comes to identifying a criminal in a hold up, resolution is everything.  Upgrading security cameras to high resolution IP cameras and providing public view monitors that display the high resolution images to the public are an excellent hold-up deterrent.  Panic buttons can also be installed in applications like this to alert the authorities in the event of a hold-up or other life-safety situation, but care must be taken to insure that these alarms communicate not only over the phone line, which can easily be cut, but also over a cellular backup communicator or radio communication link.   If you are concerned about the potential for an armed robbery at your restaurant, contact Best Defense at carter@best-defense.com we can provide free security screenings for customers in Madison and throughout Wisconsin including Milwaukee and Waukesha.

Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery Vases Stolen

Posted May 10th, 2010 by Carter Rierson

On April 21st, 2010 Bronze Flower Vases valuing over $10,600 were stolen from Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery 7302 Mineral Point Rd. Madsion

Let me be the first say that this is downright wrong.  Unfortunately the reality is that theft of metals such as bronze, aluminum and particularly copper is on the rise.  Theft from a large open area can be difficult to deter or detect and there typically aren’t a lot of people in a cemetery after dark who could deter or identify these thieves.  Solutions to catch these thieves do exist however.  The latest generation of IP cameras can provide very high resolution images even in complete darkness using infrared illumination that the cameras can see but humans cannot.  Recording entrances and key areas cemeteries could provide valuable information about who had been in the cemetery after hours.  Best Defense also offers GPS tracking devices which can be installed in items that could potentially be stolen.  If the item is moved outside of a certain radios, the GPS device sends a message to our monitoring station notifying us that it has been moved.  The monitoring station can then coordinate with local authorities to track the object using GPS as it moves.  This technology could possibly be adapted to detect vase theft.  Another option is to install a wireless transmitter to each vase that would set off a monitored alarm if the vase were tilted or removed from it’s base.  Either of these options can be offered as a temporary solution until the thief is caught.
